Dear members in Switzerland,

Lake Geneva is a global region with nearly half of its population made up of foreigners, representing some 180 nationalities and a host of NGOs, UN organizations and multinational corporations. Not surprisingly Lake Geneva region is home to a large number of Global Nomads.

An efficient nomadic leader should be at home on every continent with highly developed intercultural sensitivity. These highly mobile leaders meet the needs of the hyper-globalized economy and have what every multinational company seeks : innate intercultural instincts, mobility and adaptability. Yesterday, the top manager was the one who travelled. Today, with hyper-globalization, even the local manager needs the skills of a global leader.

These global nomads present a challenge to HR managers and coaches. How do we support them in the workplace to leverage their unique skills and help them feel grounded and fulfilled? Equally important is supporting their family’s integration.

What is the difference between a Global Nomadic Leader and an expatriate? How to recruit and retain Global Nomads? How can we help his insertion and the one of his entourage? Is it necessary to integrate them in a purely multicultural environment ? What projects should be assigned to them? How is globalization impacting leadership ?

This First, organized in collaboration with Rezonance is aimed at both the foreigners living and working in the region, as well as their families, and the NGO, UN organizations and multinationals staff assisting them with their integration within the company and the local society.

Gordon Brown et Tim Berners-Lee se donnent rendez-vous à l’Université de Genève pour discuter de l’avenir du World Wide Web comme outil au service du développement.

L’accès à Internet devrait-il être considéré comme un droit humain fondamental? Quelles sont les potentialités du Web en tant qu’instrument dans l’amélioration des conditions de vie de populations défavorisées?

Ces questions, que l’usage du Web et des téléphones portables dans les événements récents en Tunisie, en Egypte et en Libye a placées au coeur de l’actualité, sont d’une importance cruciale pour tenter de renouveler les approches relatives aux problèmes qui touchent les pays en développement.

 

 

La discussion sera modérée par Alberto Ibargüen, directeur général de laFondation Knight. Cette Grande conférence est organisée en collaboration avec la World Wide Web Foundation.

Nearly everyone incurs some sort of reaction, and adrenalin boost, when confronted with such an opportunity. We say “opportunity” rather than “challenge” because presenting yourself before an audience, small or large, should indeed be considered an “opportunity” rather than an ordeal.

Michael McKay is a Founder & Principal of McKay’s International Corporate Communications & Public Affairs, and well-known, charismatic Chair of the Geneva Chapter of the British-Swiss Chamber of Commerce (BSCC), who will lead a session on a subject of interest to nearly all of us.

Michael’s career of forty years includes working in many countries as a senior executive in multinational corporations in what is nowadays regarded as a controversial industry, namely tobacco; and more than ten years as an independent adviser.

He has addressed a variety of audiences including the Judge Business School at the University of Cambridge, the Institute of Directors Monaco Chapter, the University of Geneva, Advanced Workshops at NATO, theASIS Global Conference, the Hayek Institut in Vienna and other organisations.

As Chair of the BSCC in Geneva he has taken the chapter to a leadership position exceeding chapters in both Zurich and London, with his chapter being regarded by many as the most dynamic Anglophone pure business organisation in the Geneva region. One consequence of his relatively frequent public appearances as chairman/moderator of BSCC events is that many see and appreciate his “performances” in public.
